There are two Human Rights Commissions and they have different jurisdictions.
The Canadian Human Rights Commission applies the Canadian Human Rights Act and ensures compliance with the Employment Equity Act in respect to employment. Both laws are designed to ensure compliance with the principles of nondiscrimination and equal opportunities in areas under federal jurisdiction.
The Alberta Human Rights Commission was established by the Alberta Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Act. The majority of employers in Alberta are subject to this law.
Other provincial legislation such as the Employment Standards Code and Regulation, the
Worker's Compensation Act and the Personal Information Protection Act cover issues beyond the mandates of these two commissions.
